The next best thing to having distinguished historian and political economist Gar Alperovitz come to Hilo in person is seeing his new film, “The Next American Revolution: Beyond Corporate Capitalism &State Socialism.”
Professor Alperovitz describes efforts already underway in thousands of communities across the U.S., from co-ops and community and trusts to municipal, state, and federal initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and sustainability. He presents a commonsense road map for building a system more in sync with American values, and a strategy for the type of transformative change that can lead America from decline to rebirth.
Alperovitz looks at the growth of employee-owned companies (which now have 10 million members) and the 130 million members of co-ops and credit unions, and sees potential to democratize decision-making. The film offers a strategy for the possibility of positive change.
“The Next American Revolution: Beyond Corporate Capitalism and State Socialism” will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Room UCB 100, 200 W. Kawili St., Hilo.
The screening is free.
