A robotics competition sponsored by the Thirty Meter Telescope is continuing this year at schools across the Big Island.

The last VEX Robotic Tournament, geared toward middle and high school students, was held Saturday at Kealakehe High School.

Hilo Viking Robotics, Leilehua High, Waialua High and Island Pacific Academy qualified for championships that are slated December and January.

An Eastside tournament will take place Nov. 21 at St. Joseph High School.

A VEX IQ tournament, which is for elementary and middle school students, will be held Oct. 17 at Waikoloa Elementary School and Jan. 30 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

This tournament grew from 44 teams two years ago to 111 teams this year. The Big Island hosts 30 VEX IQ teams.

VEX IQ starter kits were provided to Hawaii Technology Academy, Waiakea Elementary, Hawaii Volcano School of Arts and Science, Mountain View Elementary, Pahoa Intermediate, Hawaii Tech Academy, Hilo Intermediate and Girl Scout Troop 524.
