A tropical storm that has formed southeast of the Big Island could provide heavy rainfall and create high surf on east and southeast shores of the Big Island this weekend.
As of 5 am. Friday, Tropical Storm Niala was 455 miles southeast of Hilo and moving northwest at 7 mph. It had sustained maximum winds of near 40 mph.
Tropical storm force winds extend 75 miles out from the center of the storm.
Floods and mudslides are possible this weekend into early next week, mainly over portions of the Big Island, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
The storm is forecast to intensify slightly before steady weakening begins after 48 hours.
It will begin to gradually turn toward the west-northwest between 12 and 36 hours.
