The Waimea Arts Council will host the 31st annual Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Juried Art Show during October.
This annual competition is open to all current or new members of the North Hawaii nonprofit arts organization. Entries will be accepted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3 at the Firehouse Gallery, a project of the Waimea Arts Council.
The show is named in honor of Helen M. Cassidy, who was instrumental in establishing the Waimea Arts Council more than 30 years ago. Cassidy’s painting career started in the 1940s when she tried to interest her daughter in painting and ended up taking lessons herself.
She studied under Lloyd Sexton and other well-known local artists. After the death of her husband, Charles E. Cassidy, an associate judge of the Hawaii Supreme Court, she moved to Waimea, and continued to paint and show her works there and at the Kona Arts Center.
Cassidy died April 8, 1985. Her efforts to establish and promote the Waimea Arts Council culminated in the Firehouse Gallery, located in the old fire station in Waimea.
Judging this year’s show is Mary Spears, a Hawaii Island fine artist and educator who works in oils and watercolors along with a variety of printmaking techniques. Spears is an art teacher and recognized in the state for her bold and enthusiastic approach to the subjects she portrays. She serves on the Art In Sight board, where her interest in education, art and health come together.
All media will be accepted: oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, drawing, photography, ceramic, glass, fiber, wood, sculpture and mixed media. There is a $20 nonrefundable entry fee per piece. Cash prizes will be awarded at the Oct. 10 reception.
