In a battle of cheers during the second quarter at a packed and waterlogged Wong Stadium, the Warriors’ fans on the left wing appeared to get the better of a sound-off against the Vikings’ partisans across the way to their right.
That spirit contest aside as Waiakea celebrated homecoming, it was all Hilo on the football field. Ka‘ale Tiogangco passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Vikings thoroughly dominated their crosstown rival 35-0 in a mud-fest.
Pono Landford ran 28 yards for a score and Skylar Ogata returned a fumble for a touchdown as the Vikings (4-1 BIIF Division I, 4-3) won their third consecutive game in convincing fashion. Heading into a Division I showdown next Friday against Kealakehe at home, the Vikings have outscored their last three foes 161-12.
Waiakea (1-4 BIIF Division I, 1-6) struggled without quarterback Makoa Andres, gaining just 13 yards at the half as the Vikings led 35-0. Quarterback Gehrig Octavio finished 3 of 10.
Tiogangco was an efficient 10 of 14 for 105 yards in the first half as the Vikings often took advantage of good field position. The exception was an 87-yard march in the second quarter, which Tiogangco capped with a 31-yard scoring toss to Lukas Kuipers.
Ogata turned an Octavio fumble into a score and Hilo only needed one play to capitalize on a Wela Mamone interception of Octavio. Taking over at the Warriors’ 15, Tiogangco found Keaho Kaawa-Wilson in the end zone.
Isaac Lerma churned 81 yards on the ground for Hilo and Ka’ono Boteilho caught four passes.
As several small lakes formed on the field, Waiakea finished with 64 yards of offense.
