Two University of Hawaii at Hilo students are studying abroad for the 2015-16 academic year after receiving the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 each.
Fred Visaya Jr., a sophomore majoring in performing arts, is studying at Rikkyo University, Japan. Visaya chose to study in Japan because of his passion for the Japanese art of taiko and goal to become a professional taiko artist.
Angelo Davis, a senior majoring in Japanese studies, is studying at Tokyo Gakugei University, Japan. Davis is furthering study of the Japanese language and plans to apply to the Japanese Exchange and Teaching program to teach in Japan.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers undergraduate students of U.S. citizenship opportunities to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.
