During the week of Sept. 21-27, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, six; Puna, four; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 784 DUI arrests compared with 857 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.5 percent.
There have been 1,120 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,168 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.
To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
