Sylvia Theresa Swain Akiona, 81, of Hilo died Aug. 30 in Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a retired clerk-typist for the Panaewa Zoo, former chief housekeeper at the former Orchid Isle Hotel, founding member and coach of the Waiakea Nakoa and Waiakeawaena Elementary School girls fast-pitch softball teams and the Leialoha women’s fast-pitch softball team that played against the Japan and Taiwan national teams. Visitation 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Reeds Bay Park. Celebration of life service at 11 a.m. Fellowship to follow. Lei welcome.
