During the week of Oct. 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, three; and Puna, one.
So far this year, there have been 822 DUI arrests compared to 907 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.
There have been 1,178 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,230 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent. To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and four to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
