Bomb planted on Pakistani bus kills 11

Bomb planted on Pakistani bus kills 11

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani officials say a bomb planted on a passenger bus in the southwestern city of Quetta killed 11 passengers and wounded another 23.

Home Secretary Akber Durrani says the bus was traveling from the city center to the nearby town of Saryab when the bomb went off Monday. He said investigators think the explosives were planted inside the bus.

Police officer Imtiaz Shah said a timed explosive device was used in the attack, and the bus was carrying about 50 passengers.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Quetta is the capital of Baluchistan province, which has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by Baloch separatist groups. Islamic militants also operate in the province.

Hajj disaster death toll at least 2,110

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A new toll shows the crush and stampede that struck the hajj last month in Saudi Arabia killed at least 2,110 pilgrims.

The count Monday by the Associated Press comes after Saudi officials said they hosted a meeting about the disaster late Sunday night. The official Saudi Press Agency reported Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdul Aziz, who also is the kingdom’s interior minister, oversaw the meeting.

Saudi Arabia’s official tally from the Sept. 24 tragedy in Mina, a few miles from the holy city of Mecca, is 769 killed and 934 injured. Officials have not updated their casualty toll since Sept. 26, although an investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing.
