Academic honor for HPA soccer

The Hawaii Prep girls soccer team was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with a High School Team Academic Award.

The Ka Makani soccer team – the two-time defending HHSAA Division II champion – was one of 398 teams (150 boys, 248 girls) nationwide recognized for performance during the 2014-2015 academic year.

To qualify, teams must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year.

Aikane Tennis set for Oct. 27

Aikane Tennis will be held on from 7-10 p.m. Oct. 27 Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.

Members are $2 and non-members cost $5.

HGEA tennis day is Oct. 25

The Hawaii Government Employees Association will hold a tennis fun day from noon-4 p.m. Oct. 25 at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.

HGEA members and their guests are invited to participate in social tennis doubles.

Tennis balls will be provided.

Neil Arakaki took top honors in the singles competition Oct. 4 as the Big Island Trap Club participated in the Pacific International Trapshooting Association multiplex shoot.

Participants shot 50 targets in singles, handicap, doubles and sub-gauge events:

• Singles, Neil Arakaki, 50

• Handicap, Mark Hironaga, 45

• Doubles, Andy Hallingstad, 42

• Sub-gauge, Dexter Egdamin and Ronald Nakamura, 47.

The next multiplex shoot will be held 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Nov. 1. Shotguns, ammunition and protection must be supplied by participants

Wrestling clinic at Hilo Civic

The 10th annual Wrestling Clinic and Take down Event will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Admission is free.

The event was previously held in Puna, but because of the high attendance last year, a bigger venue was sought.

Onsite registration runs from 7:30-8 a.m. Nov. 7.

The event is open to males and females from ages 5 and up. Keiki ages 5-12 will have a separate clinic.

All minors are required to have parent or legal guardian consent to participate in one or both activities, and parents/legal guardian must also be present at this event.

All participants, including coaches and clinicians, must have a current medical insurance card, wear shoes (wrestling or high tops), T-shirt and shorts or wrestling singlet to participate in both events.

St. Joseph (5-9) finished its BIIF girls volleyball season Friday with a 25-17, 25-19 victory against Christian Liberty (8-6).

The Canefire were incorrectly listed as the winner in the BIIF glance in Saturday and Sunday’s editions.
