The Hawaii Island Humane Society has a couple of free Howl’ween events planned for pet owners.
Keaau Family Fun Day from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Keaau Shelter will feature a pet costume contest, face painting, dog agility demonstration, nail trim and ear cleaning by Shear Magic, ono food and drinks, games and great prizes.
Everyone is welcome. The shelter is located at 16-873 Keaau Highway, Keaau.
On the morning before a night of trick-or-treating Oct. 31, HIHS invites the public to its annual Howl’ween Dog Walk in Kona. Walkers with or without dogs can participate and are encouraged to raise pledges to support the animals. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk gets underway at 8:30.
“Our Howl’ween Dog Walk is a great way to enjoy the camaraderie between pets and their owners,” said HIHS Executive Director Donna Whitaker. “Everyone always enjoys seeing the dogs — and their owners — in fantastic costumes that really add to the holiday spirit.”
The Dog Walk will include a costume contest for dogs, fun giveaways and SUP rides for pups.
“We’ve found a great venue for Howl’ween Dog Walk at the oceanfront Honu Lawn fronting Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel,” Whitaker said. “Walkers head out to Alii Drive and circle back to the lawn where the festivities continue until noon.”
Event proceeds help offset costs of animal supplies and low-cost spay and neuter services to help eliminate pet overpopulation on Hawaii Island.
Pledges can be made at www.firstgiving.com/HIHS/howlween-dog-walk-2015.
Walkers who earn a minimum of $25 in pledges will receive a surprise gift. Those who earn $50 in pledges will receive a free Howl’ween Dog Walk T-shirt. Pledge forms also are available at HIHS Kona Shelter and from many island veterinarians.
