The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a free public screening of the documentary “The Mask You Live In” at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 4 in University Classroom Building Room 100.

The viewing will begin following a 4:30 p.m. reception, and the screening will conclude with a community discussion.

The documentary is written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It examines the struggles of boys and young men to remain true to themselves as they negotiate America’s definition of masculinity.

In addition to personal narratives, the film features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education and media who discuss how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class and circumstance.

The event is sponsored by Joyful Heart Foundation, UH-Hilo’s Student Health and Wellness Programs, Men of Strength, Women’s Center and the Diversity Committee.
