Seeking their first title at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate since 2006, the Lady Vulcans were tied for the lead Monday after 36 holes at Waikoloa’s Beach Course.
Senior Kristen Sawada was one of the few UH-Hilo golfers who fared better during the day’s final 18 holes. She shot a 4-over 74 and was in second place at 10-over, two strokes behind Liedes (71-77), who won the Western Washington Invitational on Oct. 10.
The Vulcans (309-323) led by 10 strokes after the first round, but their slump later in the day left them in a first-place tie with Cal State Monterey Bay at 72-over 632.
UH-Hilo sophomore Andi Igawa (75-79) was six strokes off the lead in sixth place, and freshman Shantel Antonio (77-85) was tied for 13th. Each shot or equaled their best 18-hole effort of the season during the early round, and Mariah Paiste (81-85) did it twice. She was 16th. Alison Tengan (89-86) was 29th and Kimberly Katayama (97-89), playing unattached, was 32nd in the 33-player field.
Sawada, easily her team’s most consistent golfer this season, tied for the best second round of the day – along with Monterey Bay’s Keila Takeuchi and Linnea Karlsson – to get withing striking distance of Liedes.
Concordia’s Lynsie Furuya, Occidental’s Kristin Oberiano and Hawaii Pacific’s May Chimsuti were tied for third at 12-over.
In the team race, St. Martin’s (636) was in third place only four shots back, and Concordia (646) and Hawaii Pacific (650) rounded out the top five.
The tournament wraps up Tuesday.
