Police are seeking witnesses to a traffic collision late Wednesday on Keaau-Pahoa Highway (Route 130) near the intersection of Kukula Street by Keaau High School.

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, Puna Patrol officers responded to a report of a crash between a motorcycle and a sport-utility vehicle that was traveling against traffic. Witnesses reported that a gold Hyundai SUV had been traveling in the Keaau-bound direction in the Pahoa-bound lane of travel when it stuck a Honda motorcycle head-on.

The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old Pahoa man who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in fair condition.

The driver of the SUV fled the area before police arrived. Officers searched the surrounding brush, but couldn’t find the driver.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or who knows the identity or location of the SUV’s driver is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
