Seleni Bartley and Michelyn Pilila’au each smacked nine kills on Wednesday in Honolulu as Kapolei swept Kamehameha-Hawaii 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 in the first round of the HHSAA Division I volleyball tournament.
The Warriors’ BIIF brethren in Division II didn’t fare any better at states. Hawaii Prep and Pahoa both lost as well.
Kailee Yoshimura led BIIF runner-up Kamehameha (13-6) with nine kills, but the Warriors lost that battle 42-28 and hit only .129 at Moanalua High. Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker finished with seven kills, 12 assists, two aces and six digs.
Jayleen Abregana compiled eight kills and 16 digs for the Hurricanes (11-4), the OIA’s No. 5 team.
The Warriors will play Mililani (11-3) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in consolation play at Moanalua.
At 5 p.m. at McKinley, BIIF champion Waiakea (15-3) draws OIA runner-up Kahuku (13-2) in the quarterfinals. The Red Raiders swept Leilehua in the first round.
In Division II, Damien of the ILH swept BIIF runner-up Ka Makani 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 behind Shelby Capllonch’s 26 kills.
While the Monarchs (8-7) served six aces without an error, HPA (9-11) had only one ace with six errors at Farrington High.
Gemma Palleschi finished with 10 kills for Ka Makani, which will face the Daggers (8-12) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in consolation play at Farrington.
Pahoa dropped a 25-9, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15 decision to OIA runner-up Kailua. Dena Albinio posted 15 kills for the Surfriders (10-4). The Daggers had as many hitting errors (26) as kills. Tapenga Orevillo led the way with 10 kills and Jordyn Tagalicod had eight.
At 7 p.m. Thursday at Kaimuki, BIIF champion Konawaena (19-0) opens defense of its back-to-back Division II state titles against ILH runner-up Le Jardin (9-5). The Bulldogs swept Hana in the first round.
