HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police are investigating three reports of sharp objects found lodged inside children’s Halloween candy.
A Waimanalo mother told investigators her child was injured after biting into a candy bar with a needle in it. A Honolulu family that went trick-or-treating in Kapolei also reported finding a needle inside a treat, and a Ewa Beach woman said a sewing needle was found inside her daughter’s sealed chocolate bar.
“We checked the candy, but we just looked for tampering, something that would be obvious, but this one, the wrapper wasn’t tampered with so I think they just kind of slid the needle into the candy,” said Christine Fonoti Liu.
Liu said she tossed out the rest of the candy that her 13-year-old daughter collected in Ocean Pointe in Ewa Beach and Kapolei.
Dr. James Ireland from the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu said swallowing a needle could potentially lead to deadly consequences.
“It can actually puncture the tissues leading to a life-threatening infection, so those definitely need to be removed either endoscopically through the mouth or through a surgical procedure,” he said.
The Honolulu Police Department said these kinds of cases are highly unusual. They are warning parents to inspect all candy brought home on Halloween before it is eaten.
Police are investigating the incidents as assault cases.
