Alfred Vea was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.
The case has been reclassified to a second-degree murder and he suspect, 31-year-old Kallen Imade of Mountain View, remains at the Hilo police cellblock without charges while detectives continue the investigation.
At 11:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of an unconscious man in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street. Witnesses reported that the victim had been involved in an affray with another man and that the other man had left the area.
Vea was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to Queen’s.
Imade turned himself in to police Tuesday morning.
