The Life Care Center of Hilo will light “Candles of Care” on Nov. 15 to remember those who died as a result of any type of dementia and to support the increasing number of families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
The ceremony is part of an annual National Commemorative Candle Lighting sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. This unique event offers people touched by Alzheimer’s and related dementias the opportunity to unite in spirit and solidarity at multiple services on the same day.
Life Care Center’s candle-lighting ceremony starts at 2 p.m. at 944 W. Kawailani St. There also will be a reading of names in memory and recognition and incense burning. Pastor Ron Brav will conduct the prayer. Community members can submit names to be read and also can bring a picture of their family member.
Lee Guillermo, assistant director of social services at Life Care Center, said this is the 11th time this AFA event is taking place on Hawaii Island. AFA initiated the candle-lighting to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and to highlight the availability of community resources.
