The UH-Hilo volleyball team came out cold and was one set away from getting swept by Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday night.

The Vulcans rallied to force a fifth set, but the Argonauts prevailed 25-21, 27-25, 15-25, 9-25, 15-11 in a PacWest match in Belmot, Calif., likely extinguishing UHH’s postseason hopes.

The Vuls (10-8, 8-7 PacWest) close their road rip against Dominican (6-15, 3-13) on Saturday.

NDNU (10-15, 6-10) ended the match when Marley Strand-Nicolaisen hit into a double block.

Strand-Nicolaisen had 22 kills and hit .227, Morgan Lees (19 kills, .200) and Kyndra Trevino-Scott (13 kills, .545) had solid efforts as well.

However, in the fifth set, the Vuls had five hitting errors; the Argonauts had zero.

Bianca Alvarez had 22 kills and 25 digs to lead NDNU, which had fewers kills (64-54) and a lower attack percentage (.215-.188) than UHH.

Dixie State (15-8, 12-3) and BYU-Hawaii (13-10, 11-4) are first and second in the standings.

The Vuls (5-8-3, 4-8) snapped a four-match losing streak, and outshot Chaminade 21-10.

The last-place Silverswords (1-15, 0-12) have lost 15 in a row.

UHH goalie Tiani Teanio made four saves in the shutout.

The Vuls close their season at Hawaii Pacific at 12 p.m. Saturday.

The UHH men tied Chaminade 1-1 in double overtime.

In the second half, Vuls freshman Trent Hooper beat two defenders for a one-on-one with the goalie. Rather than blast away, Hooper did a little shuffle and tapped it past a charging goalie.

Nicolas Ferro scored on a penalty kick 11 minutes into the game to give the Silverswords a 1-0 lead.

The Vuls (4-11-2, 3-7-2) stopped a three-game losing skid.

Chaminade (1-13-1, 1-10-1) also broke a three-match losing streak.

Both teams had the same number of shots, 21 each.

The Vuls close their season against Hawaii Pacific at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Sea Warrior campus field.
