Palm Society offers free trees
The Hawaii Island Palm Society will give away 100 Native Hawaiian palm trees (Pritchardia-Lolou) today in celebration of Hawaii’s Arbor Day weekend.
The event begins at 10 a.m at the entrance of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo in Hilo. At noon, HIPS members will take attendees on a guided tour of the zoo’s extensive palm tree collection. There is a limit of one free palm tree per household.
With each palm, attendees also will receive a care sheet and booklet about Hawaii’s Pritchardia palms. HIPS also will have other palm seeds available for attendees to take with them from the zoo’s palm collection.

Orchid advice in Waimea
Orchid proprietor Matthias Seelis will answer common questions about growing the flowers at 10 a.m. today at the Waimea Homestead Farmers Market.
Seelis, of Shogun Hawaii, sells orchids at the weekly market and will advise orchid lovers about how to identify the orchid plant they have, whether or not to repot the plant and what kind of fertilizer to use.
The public is invited to attend as well as shop for the fresh bounty of Waimea and Hawaii Island-grown vegetables and fruits, and prepared foods and snacks. The 23-year-old Waimea market, in the heart of Waimea town at the Waimea Middle School grounds on Lindsey Road, is open 7 a.m.-noon every Saturday.
Memory screenings planned

Individuals concerned about memory loss can take advantage of free, confidential memory screenings from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday at Life Care Center of Hilo as part of National Memory Screening Day, an annual event presented by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to promote the detection of Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.
