Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community and visitors in November.
All programs are free, but park entrance fees apply. Programs are co-sponsored by the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association, and a $2 donation helps support park programs. Mark the calendar for these upcoming events:
• Hula performance by Halau o Akaunu
Enjoy the traditional, dynamic and talented dancers of Halau o Akaunu, a Hilo-based hula group under the instruction of kumu hula Manaiakalani Kalua.
Akaunu was created in 2012, and the ‘olapa (dancers) perpetuate the ‘aiha‘a style which was born of this landscape. Kalua received his ‘uniki (training) from Taupouri Tangao, kumu hula for Unukupukupu, whose foundation comes from the traditions of Halau o Kekuhi. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ Na Leo Manu, “Heavenly Voices” performances. Free.

These waterways and wetlands support one of the most amazing collection of birds, bugs and brawling beasts on our planet! Join park ranger Jay Robinson and biologist Jack Jeffrey on a fun-filled photo safari through the National Parks and World Heritage Site of northern Botswana.
The adventure ends at one of the seven wonders of the natural world, Victoria Falls, in nearby Zimbabwe.

• Learn to play ‘ohe hano ihu
Learn about the traditional uses of ‘ohe (bamboo) in Hawaii, including its use in creating musical instruments such as the ‘ohe hano ihu, Hawaiian nose flute.
Create your own ‘ohe hano ihu while learning about Hawaiian culture.
Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing ‘Ike Hana No‘eau, “Experience the Skillful Work” workshops. Free.
