qualify at PPK

A pair of former national champions, Captain Cook’s Jason Alani and Kealakekua’s Jayla Medeiros, were among the qualifiers Sunday at an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick sectional at Wong Stadium.

Alani unleashed a pass of 159 feet, 8 inches – 38 feet more than any other competitor – and easily topped the boys 12-13 division with the top overall combined distance.

Medeiros’ punt of 82-11 was the class of the girls 12-13 division.

They along with Austyn Filoteo, Chayce Hing, Leahi Kaupu, Nalu Kamakea, Tylana Abraham – a finalist last season – Derek Camancho and Alexandria Cruz-Kamakea advance to the team championships, which be held Dec. 20 before the San Diego Chargers host the Miami Dolphins at Qualcomm Stadium.

The national finals will be held at a playoff game in January.
