Hale Aloha ‘O Hilo Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for the 2015 Rural Housing Preservation Program to repair dilapidated single-family homes occupied by low-income families in rural Hawaii County.
Homeowner applicants must live in a rural area (everything outside Hilo), have clear title, owned and occupied the home for at least one year before applying, acceptable credit, income not exceeding USDA Rural Development “very low income” for Hawaii County, and qualify to repay the 0 percent interest loan.
Applicants also must have equity in the property. Homes must have health and safety defects, be overcrowded (as defined by HUD) or in need of accessibility improvements for a handicapped family member.
Projects typically correct leaky roofs, leaky plumbing, foundation and electrical hazards, wood-rot, insect damage and faulty catchment systems. Repairs are performed by a licensed general contractor hired by the homeowner.
USDA Rural Development and Hilo Habitat community supporters fund the Housing Preservation Program as an equal opportunity program.
Discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, ancestry/national origin, sex, physical or mental disability, marital status, age or HIV infection is prohibited by Federal Law and Habitat policy.
Funding is limited.
