HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii real estate agency executive is stepping in to direct the University of Hawaii’s land development.
Castle & Cooke senior director for community and government relations Carleton Ching will start his role at the University of Hawaii on Nov. 30.
In March, Ching’s nomination to head the Department of Land and Natural Resources was withdrawn by Gov. David Ige amid opposition from environmentalists and an anticipated lack of support in the state Senate.
Detractors questioned whether Hawaii’s natural resources would be best protected by a director who was a long-standing development lobbyist. Ige instead appointed Susanne Chase, a 28-year veteran of the Nature Conservancy, to head the land and resources department.
University officials announced the hire Friday, noting Ching has over three decades of experience.
“Carleton’s extensive experience in real estate development, coupled with his proven leadership, makes him the ideal executive to help further the university’s strategic direction and focus on being a high performance organization,” said UH President David Lassner.
According to the university, Ching “will be responsible for maximizing return on UH’s land assets and he will be charged with systemwide planning, development and oversight of the university’s developed and undeveloped properties.”
