Science Olympiad deadline nears

Science Olympiad deadline nears

The University of Hawaii at Hilo reminds all Hawaii Island middle and high schools there still is time to register for the 2016 Hawaii Island Regional Science Olympiad Tournament scheduled for Jan. 16 on the UH-Hilo campus.

The registration deadline is Nov. 25.

Science Olympiad tournaments encourage teamwork while assessing knowledge and abilities in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. The 2016 regional competition will include a broad range of events that test knowledge and understanding in the natural sciences.

Top teams will qualify for the state tournament in March on Oahu.

To register a team or to learn about the Hawaii State Science Olympiad, visit www.hsso.org, or contact the UH-Hilo Pacific Island Programs for Exploring Science at 933-0707 or hssohawaiiregionaldirector@gmail.com.

Ridley earns state honors

Hilo Life Care Center’s Chris Ridley was selected as Honoree of the Conference and First Honoree of the annual End of Fall Awards at the Hawaii State Fall Prevention Conference on Oct. 16 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu.

“Compassionate, dedicated, intelligent, life-saving, mentor and a world class organizer, Chris Ridley never stops giving to her community,” said conference organizer Stan Michaels, senior fall prevention specialist for the state Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services and Injury Prevention System Branch.

“Whether it is Big Island Youth Soccer or the Hawaii Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or to her amazing Fall Prevention Program, Chris never fails to produce quality events and services that literally save lives,” Michaels added.
