The Umauma bridge remains closed as a “precaution” because of recent heavy rains, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said.

The closure started Thursday evening and workers plan to inspect the foundation today.

“We’ll know more (this afternoon),” said Tim Sakahara, DOT public information officer. “(It will open) hopefully sooner than later. In the worst-case scenario, we’re estimating it might close through the week.”

The bridge, which crosses the Umauma gulch on Highway 19 near Hakalau, is being rehabilitated as part of a $30.8 million restoration project. It was built in 1911 and initially served the railroad. The closure started as a precautionary measure; however, Sakahara hasn’t heard any reports of structural damage.
