The state Department of Transportation has been stockpiling tons of topsoil and gravel in Panaewa for highway beautification. I think highway safety is much more important.
From mile marker 27 all the way into Hilo, if it’s raining and at night, the lines are impossible to see.
Don’t wait for a catastrophic car accident to restripe and place reflections on Highway 11. The state could be held liable for failing to make the highway safe.

Pick a better major
This is regarding the University of Hawaii at Hilo students who “marched” for free tuition and “somebody else” paying their student loan contracts (Tribune-Herald, Nov. 13).
Step One: “Income inequality.” Perhaps changing your major from international dance to electrical engineering might help overcome a weak job market. Fact: All majors are not viewed equally by the “real world.” Deal with that now.
Step Two: Tuition and associated college costs are too high? Consider ROTC. UH-Hilo was your choice. You knew the costs the first day of your college education. They are a matter of public record. Yes, I know you have “feelings,” but you are not delicate little flowers. Frankly, no one feels sorry for you. Certainly not those working 40-60 hours a week in the private sector.
Step Three: You signed the student loan applications, probably in triplicate. Perhaps a course in contract law might help you understand your responsibilities.
Final thought: This might come as a shock, but I am not interested in paying your tuition or your student loans. You need to work hard, stay away from $400 iPhones, $75 a month phone contracts and $140 Nikes, and honor YOUR commitments and responsibilities.

Manifest peace now!
With all the nonsense crap going on — wars, violence, etc. — it’s very ironic nothing is being done. So many innocent lives lost because there is too much hate, envy, jealousy, anger and rage in the world.
Gun control needs to be a serious issue, and a peaceful solution must be created because wars cost to much.
I don’t know, but in my opinion, too many people are plagued by the darkness of their own insecurities. The apocalypse is here and only idiots sit down and do nothing. Hate all you want, but hate will never create peace.
In closing, remember what Jesus said: “Return ye not evil for evil, but return evil with good.”
May more people wake up from the trance.
