During the week of Nov. 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, five; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 941 DUI arrests compared to 1,022 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.
There have been 1,322 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,375 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been 17 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 11 for all of 2014, an increase of 54.5 percent.
To date, 11 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
