The Umauma bridge should be open to alternating traffic by Friday, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The Highway 19 bridge near Hakalau, which is undergoing repairs, was closed Thursday evening because of heavy rains and flooding in the gulch below.
A DOT spokesman said Tuesday crews will make improvements to the bridge foundation today before reopening it to traffic.
A detour via Old Mamalahoa Highway remains in effect.
