One of our curious characteristics seems to be to subject ourselves to the stifling and straitjacket effects of labels, such as being conservative, liberal, progressive, Democrat, Republican, socialist, and on and on.
The fundamental consideration for a candidate for a public office at any level of our society should be what he or she believes to be the best course of action in any give case, with absolutely no regard whatsoever to labels.

Gov. David Ige’s decision to welcome Syrian refugees to Hawaii shows the spirit of aloha, but also might be politically motivated.
Accept the refugees, and federal funds will continue to come to our state. Reject the refugees, then no more federal funding for our state. Enough said.

Fear breeds hate
My day started on a very sad note after reading Bear Barrilleaux’s letter requesting our “aloha state” to close its borders to refugees fleeing violence and injustice in the world (Your Views, Nov. 18).
May I remind you, Mr. Barrilleaux, there is only one race of people on this planet and that is the human race.
Most humans are good and, unfortunately, there are some quite the opposite. To clump all people together based on ethnic background or religion is a sign of ignorance.
And in case you never learned this, ignorance breeds fear, and fear breeds hatred. Please reconsider your thoughts on this, lest you be clumped with those you hate so much. Where is your aloha?

Ideas for HIHS
May I offer a suggestion for our local Hawaii Island Humane Society?
Run a weekly or biweekly full-page ad in the Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today with photos and adoption procedures of the dogs and cats available.
Perhaps the newspapers would even provide the space at little or no cost to HIHS.
I am reasonably sure that there are a number of families that would provide care and companionship for these animals.
This suggestion would not be a 100 percent solution, but could possibly save some animals from an untimely end to their lives.
