The UH-Hilo men’s basketball team struggled with its inside game Friday, falling to 0-2 with a 100-87 loss to Central Washington in Seattle.

The UH-Hilo men’s basketball team struggled with its inside game Friday, falling to 0-2 with a 100-87 loss to Central Washington in Seattle.

The Wildcats (2-0) controlled the paint, outscoring the Vulcans 38-26 and holding a 45-34 rebounding advantage.

After missing UH-Hilo’s season-opening loss to Montana State with an injury, leading returning big man Darius Johnson-Wilson played 14 minutes and finished with seven points and three rebounds.

However, most of the Vulcans’ points came from guards.

Parker Farris netted his second consecutive 20-point game, scoring 23 and making three 3-pointers. Van Lockett scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting before fouling out, and Chris Holmes finishes with 10.

Forward Nate Walker (nine points) led the Vulcans with nine rebounds, but they were outscored 18-6 on second-chance points.

Guard Gary Jacobs led the Wildcats with 23 points and center Joseph Stroud collected 18 points and six rebounds.

The Vulcans face Seattle Pacific on Friday.

UH women win

Connie Morris scored 16 points and the Hawaii overcame poor shooting by stifling Loyola Marymount 65-51 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic at Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawaii (3-0) yielded only 27.9 percent shooting to pull away from the Lions (0-3) in the fourth-quarter.

Vulcans volleyball loses

Hawaii Pacific fought off a set point in Game 3 and had a much easier time of it in the fourth set, beating UH-Hilo 25-21, 18-25, 27-25, 25-11 in Honolulu.

Evelin Solyomvari tallied 11 kills for the Vulcans (11-11, 9-10) and Marley Strand Nicolaisen finished with eight kills without an error, but UH-Hilo coach Tino Reyes said his team’s passing wasn’t up to snuff.

The Sharks (15-12, 10-9) outhit UH-Hilo .247-.181.
