Parker Farris had another highlight scoring performance for the UH-Hilo men’s basketball team, but that wasn’t enough to compensate for a porous defense.
Behind 55 percent shooting, Seattle Pacific drilled the Vulcans 86-73 in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge on Saturday at Seattle, continuing a troubling pattern.
UHH (0-3) next plays St. Martin’s on Tuesday at Lacey, Wash., to close its road trip.
In all three losses, UHH’s opponents have had a higher shooting percentage and more rebounds.
Farris scored 27 points on 10 of 15 shooting to lead the Vuls, who shot 48 percent from the floor. Patrick Ball added 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting and Jordan Russell had 11 points.
Central Washington’s Gary Jacobs, from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, was named the MVP.
Farris was the only Vul to make the All-Tournament team.
Bryce Leavitt scored 21 points to lead the Falcons, who outrebounded UHH, 38-22, including a lopsided 13-4 on the offensive end.
That led to SPU outscoring UHH in second-chance points, 12-2, mostly because the Vuls failed to block out.
The Vuls also struggled from 3-point range (4 of 22) and often failed to get to the free throw line (11 of 12).
The Falcons were better with both: 9 of 21 on treys and 23 of 34 from the line.
UHH is also struggling to find production from its post players. Forward Darius Johnson-Wilson had no points on 0 for 4 shooting and center Nate Walker had four points on 1 of 4 shooting.
