The Army is opening several portions of Pohakuloa Training Area training areas for bird hunting Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, and Saturday and Sunday.

The Army is opening several portions of Pohakuloa Training Area training areas for bird hunting Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, and Saturday and Sunday.

The Humuula Unit (training areas 1-4) and Ahi Unit (training areas 9, 12-16 and portion of 18) will be open from 5 a.m.-7 p.m. for shotgun hunting of birds only.

All hunters must check in and check out at one of the new Army check-in stations located at the following locations:

• Old Saddle Road Gate, across from the Mauna Kea State Park entrance.

• Mile marker 49.5 gate on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, about 1 1/2 miles from Mamalahoa Highway on the left.

• Gate 10 near mile marker 53 on Old Saddle Road, one mile from Mamalahoa Highway.

Checkout time is no later than 7 p.m. each day. Use of shotgun slugs is not permitted.

Access to training areas is by foot only. Hunters should review the hunting pass for a list of designated parking areas.
