Dawnyelle Awa

Dawnyelle Awa

Sport: basketball

The performance: It was far from Dawnyelle Awa’s first conquest in Honolulu, but this one had to feel special in its own right.

Awa, a 5-foot-9 senior guard at Washington State, scored a career-high 16 points Sunday to lead the Cougars to a 62-52 victory against Hawaii at the Rainbow Wahine Classic. Awa shot 6 of 11 and scored six points in the fourth quarter to break her previous career high of 13 points set against Nebraska in 2013.

In four games this season, she’s averaging 9.3 points.

Of course, 16-point games were commonplace for Awa during a standout high career at Konawaena that saw her help the Wildcats to three HHSAA Division I championships.
