The Big Island Buddhist Federation will hold its Bodhi Day Celebration hosted by Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin at 9 a.m. Dec. 6 at Sangha Hall.

Featured keynote speaker will be Ivan Nakano. The public is invited.

Bodhi Day commemorates the day more than 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and became Buddha, the “Awakened One.”

Buddha achieved this after abandoning a life of privilege, enduring lengthy ascetic practices and rejecting the delusions of temptation, all motivated by the desire to ease human suffering. Thereafter, he embarked on a lifelong sharing of the principles of compassion, kindness and peace, which unify all Buddhist sects and resonate among many today.
