According to a Hawaii County Fire Department statement, an unattended citronella candle which was lit in a bedroom to prevent mosquitoes might have started the blaze at 322 Ainako Avenue in the lower Kaumana area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Two fire companies with 11 firefighters responded to the alarm at 9:08 p.m. with the first unit on-scene four minutes later. The fire was reportedly under control at 9:15 p.m. and extinguished at 9:30 p.m.
The occupants of the home, a 32-year-old woman and two children, ages 7 and 9, escaped safely.
