The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope will welcome the community to its base facility in Waimea tonight for an evening of stargazing.

“There’s nothing like the night sky bright with stars and a mug of hot chocolate to bring the community together,” said Mary Beth Laychak, outreach program manager at CFHT. “We can’t wait to open up our headquarters to everyone for a night of fun, friendship and stars.”

The Winter Star Party will take place from 7-10 p.m. at CFHT headquarters, 65-1238 Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea. The observatory will set up telescopes on its front lawn along with a whole set of family activities.

Participants can visit the “Ask an Astronomer” booth and see how CFHT performs remote astronomical observing from the Waimea control room, or make a special astronomical holiday ornament at the keiki activity booth. The observatory will offer hot chocolate, s’mores and more.

Lucky Draw ticket holders might even win a family ticket package to ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo.

All activities are free.

The observatory reminds visitors to also consider attending the 55th annual Waimea Christmas Twilight Parade from 5:30-6:45 p.m. and shop at businesses brimming with gift ideas and holiday cheer.
