WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A man will spend up to 15 years in prison for drug charges and a fatal crash that killed a 61-year-old bicyclist in 2014.
More than two dozen bicyclists pedaled themselves to 29-year-old Michael Cattaneo’s hearing Friday, where the defendant received consecutive sentences for drug charges and crashing his pickup truck into Wailea resident Karl Hagen.
Cattaneo had pleaded no contest to first-degree negligent homicide, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.
The drug charges stem from an arrest nine months after the fatal crash. Cattaneo was found with a methamphetamine pipe.
The defense had argued for jail time and drug treatment. Hagen’s wife and two daughters spoke about him at the hearing.
Cattaneo apologized and said sorry can’t bring anything back.
