Are you or a loved one on the autism spectrum? Would you like to share what it means to you as a person — the joys, the struggles and anything else?

Are you or a loved one on the autism spectrum? Would you like to share what it means to you as a person — the joys, the struggles and anything else?

The University of Hawaii at Hilo invites you to share your story at “My Journey, My Voice,” a free, public event celebrating life on the spectrum.

“We’re inviting high-schoolers through adults on the spectrum to share their stories and express autism from their own point of view,” says Anayah Doi, an Applied Learning Experience student intern with UH-Hilo Disability Services who is helping plan the event. “All kinds of self-expression are welcome: speech, sharing art pieces and poetry, and even music or dance. People can also participate anonymously, if they prefer.”

The event is planned for 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016, at UH-Hilo’s open-air Campus Center Plaza. The deadline to sign up is Jan. 14. To participate, call Doi at 238-6280 or anayah@hawaii.edu, or ALEX intern Roxanne Paragas at 281-7212 or mrvp@hawaii.edu.
