Students at E.B. deSilva Elementary School counted the canned food donations they collected last month and were very surprised and happy they had more than 1,200 donations for the Food Basket — a total of 1,129 pounds.
This was the largest amount the school has ever donated, according to school counselor Shana Bartolome.
In addition to the food drive, two fifth-grade and two sixth-grade classes participated in a “canstruction contest,” using the canned goods as building materials. Judges were recruited from the community and a great time was had by all.
The students showed a lot of creativity and enthusiasm in planning and executing their canstruction projects. First-place winners from Kimberlee Chinen’s sixth-grade class built the Eiffel Tower to show worldwide unity and support of the people of France and those who have fallen on that fateful day of terror.
Principal Dennis O’Brien sends his heartfelt thanks to the school community for making the food drive and canstruction contest a success.
