WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Haleakala National Park will be closed to commercial tours Tuesday so that Native Hawaiians can use the area to practice cultural traditions.
The park will be
open to visitors who pay regular park fees on a day set aside as part of the Commercial Services Plan at Haleakala.
Commercial-free days are also set for March 9 and June 21.
Park officials chose the dates using input from Native Hawaiian employees, residents and the Bishop Museum, among others.
Haleakala Park Superintendent
Natalie Gates says
the hope is that community members will
take advantage of these days by coming to the park.
She also said the
park is looking to improve the experience for visitors where possible.
