DJ Madigan converted on his chance Monday, and freshman goalkeeper freshman Emmet Alcos preserved a 1-0 victory against Waiakea with a pair of spectacular saves in a BIIF soccer match at Old Kona Airport Park.
“I talked to DJ before the season and told him he was going to take our kicks,” Dong said.
Madigan earned the chance early in the second half when Will Bertsch broke free and was dragged down in the penalty box.
The Lions (3-0-0) beat the Warriors (2-2-0) for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
Waiakea didn’t go down without a fight, but it was stonewalled by Alcos.
Dong said his freshman had to stretch out so far to block a shot by Gehrig Octavio that he ended up in the side of his net. He also stopped a shot by Michael Scott that was ticketed for the top left corner.
“We are nursing a lot of injuries, so I was proud to see the quality of our depth,” Dong said. “We showed a lot of maturity.”
