The Hilo High School class of 1966 will gather for two 50th class reunion events scheduled for May 22-27, 2016, in Las Vegas and Oct. 15, 2016, in Hilo.

Public invited to MLK Day event
The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Committee is gearing up for its 35th anniversary commemoration starting at noon Jan. 17 at the Old Kona Airport Beach Park Makeo pavilion.
The public is invited to this free community celebration, program and potluck (bring a favorite dish to share). There will be art displays and songs and music by local schools and community.

Squash and Awe presentations set
Anna Peach, owner of Squash and Awe Farm, will offer two presentations at North Kohala Public Library to jump-start a new year of healthy eating and living.
The first presentation at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 will focus on the amazing properties of squash, how to grow them, why to eat them and ways to enjoy them.
At 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1, Peach will share her simple fermentation process to enhance a variety of vegetables.
Both programs are free and open to the public.

Lions assist justice center
The Akaka Falls Lions Club recently assisted in cleaning out and organizing an attached garage of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii.
The service project also included painting a room and shelving in the center and power-washing the exterior sidewalks and concrete stairs.
Thirty-two Lions and family members contributed 125 man hours of service to earn $10,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, which was presented to CJCEH to assist abused children.
