Celebrate Christmas with ‘Sandy Paws.’

Celebrate Christmas with ‘Sandy Paws.’

Dr. Carl Oguss of the East Hawaii Dog Psychology Center will host beach parties for dogs and dog lovers Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 26-27) in Hilo.

Oguss invites dog owners to join the fun and get free instruction in how to get dogs to love swimming — one of the best exercises for dogs and a great way to vent their excess energy and avoid behavior problems. Oguss will give away training leashes and meaty treats, as well as show people how best to get even the most reluctant dogs into the water. Participants only need to bring a bowl for fresh water.

The Sandy Paws beach parties are set for noon-2 p.m. both days in between the Reeds Bay Hotel and the Reeds Bay Beach Park on Banyan Drive.

“Give your dog what they really want for Christmas: a wonderful outing with Mom or Dad, some great exercise, a chance to be around other dogs, and the enjoyment of our beautiful Hawaiian coastline,” Oguss said.

After the parties, Oguss will teach his regular pro bono weekend classes — Service Saturdays and Social Sundays — from 2-4 p.m. in Liliuokalani Park and Gardens. Everyone is invited to the class Sunday to learn about dog psychology, enjoy a “pack walk” and learn how to fix canine behavioral problems.
