Police have charged a Puna man with 27 offenses in connection with an alleged double rape Tuesday near Piihonua falls above Hilo.
At 10:15 p.m. Thursday, 36-year-old Oran Charles Kita, who has no permanent address, was charged with 15 counts of first-degree sex assault, seven counts of third-degree sex assault, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of kidnapping and one count of marijuana possession.
Bail was set at $891,000 and Kita is expected to appear in court on those offenses Monday.
He is in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center after pleading not guilty Thursday on commercial promotion of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges related to a 2011 search warrant at his former home in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
Police are still investigating another first-degree sexual assault that was reported in 2011.
First-degree sex assault and kidnapping are Class A felonies punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment.
