Kupuna softball tourney slated
The Hui Aumakua youth organization will host a kupuna softball tournament Jan. 9-10 at Walter Victor Stadium.
The event is a “fundraiser” and warm-up for the 2016 Hawaii Kupuna Softball League, which opens Jan. 23 around the Big Island.
As of Monday, 12 teams are entered with teams scheduled to play a minimum of four games over the two days. Entry fees from each team and proceeds from the concession stand will help defray expenses for Hui Aumakua’s planned trip for its Bronco (ages 11-12) team to participate in a week-long baseball tournament at Cooperstown, New York. More than 100 teams from around the 50 states compete each year in the tourney. Sunao Taketa of the Kona Warriors, who celebrated his 90th birthday this month, will be honored at a brief ceremony on Saturday as the oldest active player in the Kupuna league.

Garrett Zane posted the top singles score at a Big Island Trap Club multiplex shoot earlier in the month at the county trap and skeet range.

Friends of Viking Golf Tournament
Friends of Viking Golf is holding its 31st annual fundraising tournament Jan 30. at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
The format will be a two-person modified scramble with a 7 a.m shotgun start. Men older than 65 may use the gold tees.
Prizes will be awarded.
Entry blanks are available at the Muni pro-shop and driving range. Cost is $80 per person, and the early bird special includes green fees, cart, and lunch and a T-shirt.
