Geologist to talk about Kilauea

“Kilauea Volcano’s East Rift and Summit Eruptions: Events of the Past Year” is the title of a public talk Thursday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Matt Patrick will talk about Kilauea’s ongoing East Rift and summit eruptions. His talk begins at 7 p.m. in the University Classroom Building, Room 100, and is free and open to the public.

Chung to lead ‘Kakou’ program

Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s free brown bag lunch talk series continues this month with a program titled “Kakou, All of Us Together” with community builder and business owner Lucille Chung from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Ave., Hilo.

Defined as “we are in this together” and “all of us,” kakou is a word of inclusion and strength as a group. Join Chung as she presents proven practices that help build a spirit of community, strive to include everyone and encourage all to participate.

Author hosting VAC workshop

Hone your writing skills, explore your creative mind and discover your unique voice in a new writing workshop with popular Big Island writing teacher and award-winning novelist Tom Peek from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Volcano Art Center.

In his newest workshop, “Writing On The Wild Side,“ Peek offers a wealth of knowledge that writers can use in everyday social media sharing, including journaling and blogging. “Writing on the Wild Side” will help writers create prose that people actually want to read.

The class will be conducted at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Class fee is $75/$65 for VAC members.

NHERC class date changed

The date of the Basic Grant Writing Workshop with Jeani Navarro offered through the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center has changed.

The time and date are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at Waikoloa Elementary School.
