During the week of Jan. 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, seven; Kona and South Hilo, six each; South Kohala, three; North Hilo, two; and Ka‘u, one.
So far this year, there have been 54 DUI arrests compared to 48 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.5 percent.
There have been 25 major accidents so far this year compared to 21 during the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent.
So far this year, there have been no official traffic fatalities compared to one during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
