WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Emergency crews on Maui recovered the body of a man found inside a vehicle 200 feet below Kahekili Highway.
Firefighters and police responded to the scene Wednesday after a report of a possible accident. Authorities say a helicopter was called in to help locate the vehicle, which was found in a ravine.
A firefighter dropped down to the car and removed the man’s body. The Maui Police Department is investigating.
Honolulu to add more bike lanes by end of year
HONOLULU (AP) — An effort by Honolulu officials to add more bike lanes in the city has some concerned about the effect on parking space for drivers.
Officials are looking to add bike lanes to McCully Street by the end of the year and a protected bike lane on a portion of South Street. The protected bike lane is similar to the one that opened on King Street in December 2014.
“The general public is aware that more bikes are off the sidewalk and they’re on the street where they belong,” said Mike Formby, director of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services. “We’ve only had maybe a handful of minor accidents, nothing major, so we’re very happy.”
South Street was listed as a priority in the city’s bike lane plan four years ago. The planned bike lane for South Street will connect with the lane on King Street.
The city’s plan also includes lining both sides of McCully Street with bike lanes, a move that likely would mean getting rid of parking spots.
Some residents say that would worsen the city’s parking problems along already-cramped streets.
The city is trying to do away with most of the parking spots on McCully Street and move them to nearby side streets. That would result in more space for bike lanes without taking away parking options for drivers.
According to the city, there are 700 cyclists who use the King Street protected bike lane in a 12-hour period.
After the bike lanes are added on McCully and South streets, city officials say they are considering bike lanes for Pensacola Street and in Waikiki.
